SDIG Tennakoon goes on leave

Western Province Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon has taken a 14-day leave and D.J. Palihakkara has been appointed as the Acting Senior DIG-in-Charge of the Western Province during that period.

Previously, the Attorney General had directed IGP C.D. Wickramaratne to transfer Senior DIG Tennakoon so, as to avoid interfering with the on-going investigations into the incidents that occurred on 9 May.

SDIG Tennakoon had reportedly instructed officials to tighten security at several important and main locations in Colombo, including the President’s House, Temple Trees, and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s official residence at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7, which were vulnerable.

In response to a media query, he said steps had been taken to increase security at those locations based on information received from intelligence services.

According to intelligence sources, it had been advised to provide maximum security to Mahinda Rajapaksa because there was a possibility of public protests or attacks where he travels or stays permanently. Intelligence agencies had also revealed that a number of trade unions, students’ unions, civil society organisations, and other groups were unhappy with the former Prime Minister.

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family spent several days at the Trincomalee Naval Base following the violence in Colombo on May 9.
