Turmeric growers based in Matale lamented that thousands of acres of turmeric cultivated in the Matale District have become unsuitable for sale due to lack of proper pricing.
According to them, a kilogramme of raw turmeric was sold for Rs 500 to Rs 800 last season, but now the price is between Rs 100 and Rs 125. In addition to other intercrops such as vegetables, many farmers in the Matale District have grown turmeric this year to increase their income.
A large amount of turmeric has been cultivated this year in many areas of the Matale District, including Yatawatta, Naula, Akarahaduwa, and Lihinipitiya.
Many farmers said a kilogramme of turmeric seeds could be purchased and planted for as much as Rs 900-1,000.
Farmers in Lihinipitiya said about 25 acres of turmeric have been planted after obtaining bank loans. As a result, turmeric farmers in Matale District have become helpless, and there is a need for a government-backed programme to purchase their produce, the farmers said.
