Major General Liyanage appointed new Army Commander


President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Major General Vikum Liyanage as the new Commander of the Army.

The President handed over the letter of appointment to Major General Liyanage at the President’s House in Colombo this morning (31).

He will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and will assume duties tomorrow.

Meanwhile, General Shavendra Silva will continue to serve as Chief of Defence Staff from 1 June.

General Silva was serving as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army when he was appointed the Commander of the Army on 19 August 2019.
