CIABOC files fresh indictment against Johnston et al


The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) yesterday (30), filed a fresh indictment against former Minister Johnston Fernando and two others on charges of fraud.

The indictment was filed, before the High Court, against Fernando, former Chairman of Sathosa, Eraj Triyantha Fernando and the former Working Director Kaja Mohideen Mohomad Shakir.

While five cases were filed in this regard before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, against the trio previously, the defendants were released by the Magistrate’s Court based on preliminary objections raised that the charges did not contain the signatures of all three  Commissioners of the CIABOC. Therefore, CIABOC filed fresh Indictment yesterday (30).

The Indictment was filed against Fernando and two others for committing fraud in contravention of their official responsibilities during Fernando’s tenure as Minister of Co-operatives and Internal Trade.

Accordingly, the CIABOC submitted to the Court, a list of 45 witnesses and nine documents in this connection.
