Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda claimed that responsible government officials were negligent in providing cultivation destruction details to relevant authorities in order for them to carry out relief work or implement compensation programmes.
He added that at a time when the people of this country are facing a severe economic crisis, government officials should not act in a way that impedes relief efforts.
Devananda made these remarks during a discussion at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat regarding the provision of relief to famers affected by crop destruction caused by a lack of chemical fertilisers. The Fisheries Minister pointed out that as chemical fertilisers were not used in the cultivation process the production in Kilinochchi had dropped by a considerable quantity compared to previous years. However, accurate information had not been sent to Colombo in this connection.
Minister Devananda made a request to government officials to submit an accurate assessment reports of required amount of fertiliser for the Yala Season and added that he would make the necessary arrangements to get chemical fertilisers on subsidised rate in consultation with the Government of India.
