CIABOC files indictments against Johnston et al over 2010 Sathosa case

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (30) filed indictments against three individuals, including former Minister Johnston Fernando, before the Colombo High Court.

Indictments were also filed against former Chairman of the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE/Lanka Sathosa) Eraj Fernando, and former CWE Working Director Mohamed Shakeer

CIABOC filed charges against the trio for the use of over 100 Lanka Sathosa employees for political activities during Johnston Fernando’s tenure as the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade between 01 January and 31 December 2010, for which over Rs. 8.4 million had been misappropriated.

A total of 45 persons have been named as witnesses.

The trio were accused of the same during the previous ‘Yahapalanya’ regime, and a case was filed by CIABOC with the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

The case was later withdrawn, however, and the accused were released on grounds of the absence of the written sanction of the three commissioners of CIABOC, prior to the case filing.
