The main suspect involved in the recent death of a nine-year-old girl in Atalugama, Bandaragama, has been arrested.
The suspect, identified as a 29-year-old father of three, and a resident of Atalugama, Bandaragama, had confessed to murdering the girl, and is due to be produced in court later today (30), Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa revealed.
The report of the postmortem, which was conducted today at the Panadura Base Hospital, showed no signs of rape, he added.
The nine-year-old was reported missing on Friday (27), when she had not returned home after visiting a shop earlier that day. Area residents later found her body on Saturday evening (28), in a marshy land near her residence.
The Bandaragama Police launched investigations when the complaint was initially launched, however, the investigation was then handed over to the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on orders of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Several statements were recorded from nearly 20 individuals, including residents and those potentially involved in the tragic incident, which later led to the arrest of the 29-year-old.
Meanwhile, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) too, launched an investigation of their own.
