SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Maddumabandara has requested IGP Chandana Wickramaratne not to arrest protesters who had engaged in peaceful demonstrations at Galle Face Green and at Temple Trees prior to the 9 May mayhem.

Issuing a letter to the IGP, the SJB General Secretary has noted that the Police Department was currently engaged in a witch hunt to apprehend protesters who had engaged in peaceful demonstrations at the said venues on 9 May.

He charged that the Police Department was doing this whilst utilising video footage captured of the violence that broke out on the said date.

Maddumabandara has added that instead of striving to arrest the real perpetrators of the 9 May crimes, the Police Department was attempting to arrest innocent people who had no link to the mayhem and this was an affront to the law and failure to uphold it will result in a total breakdown of law and order in the country.
