Incumbent Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army, Major General Vikum Liyanage will be appointed as the new Army Commander with effect from 1 June.
Meanwhile, General Shavendra Silva will continue to serve as Chief of Defence Staff from 1 June.
General Silva was serving as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army when he was appointed the Commander of the Army on 19 August 2019.
Recently, there were allegations that General Silva was holding the present appointment without legitimate service extension. However, the Ministry of Defence categorically denied the allegation, saying the service extension granted to Gen. Silva was valid and it was effective from 31 December 2021. General Silva was appointed as the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army on 17 August 2019 by then President Maithripala Sirisena.
