In a bid to increase the powers of the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) and the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) the Draft Amendment of the Standing Orders (SO) of Parliament was submitted to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena by Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena.
The Leader of the House made a special statement in Parliament on 20 May that these amendments will be brought to the Standing Orders of Parliament to empower the Committees, not only to submit reports once in a few months, but also to move forward.
He said, “The Government plans to submit amendments to the Standing Orders of Parliament to give more powers to the COPE, COPA and other Parliamentary Committees.
“These committees deliver a huge service and present reports to the House. Unfortunately, their duties are limited. Therefore, we hope to bring amendments to the Standing Orders, so that these Committees can go forward.”
