A committee was appointed to investigate any failure on the part of the Military and State Intelligence in connection with the unrest that took place in Mirihana, near President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s private residence, on 30 April and the attack on anti-Government protesters on 9 May.

The committee comprises Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Goonetileke and General R.M. Daya Ratnayake.

The first sitting of the committee will be held today (27)  and General Ratnayake said the investigations will only focus on any lapses on the part of the Military and Intelligence during the said incidents and any unrest that unfolded ever since.

A peaceful protest by civilians in Mirihana went out of hand on 30 April when Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd while the protesters knocked down the barricades. This was followed by escalated anti-Government protests around the country and on 9 May, a group of SLPP supporters attacked peaceful protesters opposite GotaGoGama and MynaGoGama, killing several and injuring several others.
