Ranil gets Finance

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies. The swearing-in took place before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the President’s House in Colombo yesterday (25).

Secretary to the President, Gamini Senarath was also present in the occasion.

Accordingly, Wickremesinghe will lead talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the crisis-hit country seeks a bailout.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday (24), Wickremesinghe laid out his immediate plans for the economy, including presenting an interim budget within six weeks that will slash government’s expenditure “to the bone” and re-route funds into a two-year relief programme.
