The Navy apprehended 67 individuals in Trincomalee on 24 May, foiling their illegal migration attempt from the country. There were three children among those detained.
The arrests were made during a special operation conducted by a group of Navy personnel from the Naval Dockyard in coordination with the Nilaveli Police.
“The arrested group comprised 12 persons aged between 30 and 40 years and 55 individuals, aged between three and 53 years, including five smugglers. Based on information revealed by the would be migrants, Naval vessels were deployed to locate a multiday fishing trawler in seas off Trincomalee,” Naval authorities said.
One multiday fishing trawler, two three-wheelers, a cab and a van used by the group were also taken into custody.
The would be migrants are residents of Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Puttalam, Ampara, Ratnapura, Gampaha and Colombo.
Naval officials who were engaged in the operation have taken measure to handover the suspects to Nilaveli and Uppuveli Police for legal action. (NV)
