Former PM questioned by CID over 09/05 attacks


The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday (25) recorded a statement from former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa over the violence that transpired on 09 May.

Accordingly, Rajapaksa had given a statement for nearly five hours when CID officials visited his residence last evening, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa confirmed.

The CID has recorded statements from several persons affiliated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), including former Minister Johnston Fernando and Senior DIG – Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, after Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam ordered the arrest of 22 persons, including Mahinda Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa.

Earlier this month (09), violent protests erupted near Galle Face Green and Temple Trees, and subsequently throughout the country, after peaceful protesters were attacked by government supporters.
