Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has instructed the IGP Chandana Wickramaratne to take steps to appoint new OICs, following proper procedure.
The Minister has instructed the IGP to call for new applications for the appointment of OICs for each Police Station, and that the procedure should entail appointing suitable officers to the post.
IGP Wickramaratne said, the reason for the public’s frustration against the Police was the intense politicisation of the Police in the recent past.
In a confidential letter addressed to the former Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security, Jagath Alwis, he described how the Police had become politicised over a short period of time.
According to the letter, of the 184 officers who were appointed as OICs from 1 January 2021 to 3 November 2021, only two OICs possessed the required qualifications to fit the post.
The remaining 182 were appointed solely on political recommendations.
