Batti students denied admission to sit O/L – Secy. CTU

Secretary of Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), Batticaloa District, Udayaroopan alleged yesterday (25) that several students coming under the Batticaloa Zonal Education have been denied admission by certain principals to sit the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination that commenced on Monday (23).

Udayaroopan lamented that the examination is held amidst immense difficulties, given the current situation in the country.

While expressing his displeasure over this issue, Udayaroopan said that the CTU considered this action as a gross violation of the fundamental rights of students.

The Government provides free education and it is made compulsory on all children between the ages of five and sixteen. Even when students obtain poor results in the examination, they are given the option to choose other streams such as the technical stream to assist them on a career path. The Batticaloa Zonal Director of Education must take the blame and be held accountable for this issue, Udayaroopan added.
