Refuelling of aircraft at BIA and Mattala International Airport has been drastically reduced and may come to a complete halt by 31 May, CPC trade unionists warned.
Airlines are currently being advised to refuel in Chennai, Dubai, the Maldives, and the UK before and after arrival in Sri Lanka. Local airports have been refuelling a limited number of litres of jet fuel in recent months, but the situation has now deteriorated to the point where Sri Lanka cannot supply fuel to domestic airlines, according to the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya.
They also stated that a ship carrying 90,000MT of crude oil has docked at the Colombo Port and is paying demurrage of USD 15,000 per day.
TUs stated that they do not know how the matter will be resolved, but attempts by Ceylon Today to contact the Minister of Power and Energy, the Ministry Secretary, Chairman of Airport Services and Vice Chairman proved futile.
