President to serve as Acting Finance Minister

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will serve as Acting Finance Minister until an appointment is made, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday (24).

He said, the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe must make the final decision on appointing a Finance Minister. “But for the time being, the President is overseeing financial matters,” he said.

A fresh Cabinet was appointed on 23 May for the third time this year. The country is yet to appoint a Finance Minister, despite the ongoing IMF discussions. Former Finance Minister Ali Sabry participated in the IMF discussions, however, he has not been given any ministerial portfolio in the new Cabinet yet. (TR)
