Local apprehended attempting to smuggle Rs 1.57M worth wallapatta


Customs apprehended a local passenger attempting to smuggle wallapatta aka Gyrinops walla worth over Rs1. 57 million, yesterday (23). The detection was made at the BIA.

The consignment weighed 4.5 kilos and consisted of wallapatta pieces. The suspect was attempting to smuggle the consignment hidden in his luggage to Dubai.

The arrest and investigation was carried out under the Customs Ordinance for attempting to export goods that are illegal or restricted, Customs officers are conducting the investigation.

Wallapatta is considered endemic to Sri Lanka.  The natural plant resin is used as an ingredient in the manufacture of expensive perfumes. However, under the provisions of the Forest Conservation Act, it is illegal to attempt, damage, transport, sell or export these plants without the written permission of the Forest Conservator General.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora also restricts international trade in Wallapatta.
