Heavy rains cause havoc in Puttalam

Due to the heavy rains which occurred in the Puttalam District yesterday (24) and day before yesterday (23) several low-lying areas in Puttalam have been inundated. Puttalam Zahira College and St. Andrew’s College where G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination centres have been set up were among them.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, Assistant Director of Media and Public Relations of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Janaka Handunpathiraja, said the DMC had relocated the centres to other school buildings located in safe areas, after obtaining permission from the Department of Examinations, with assistance from the 143 Regiment of the Army.

He said the DMC had provided lunch and dinner to students and officials engaged in examination duties.

If there are any obstacles in holding examinations due to natural disasters, the DMC can be notified on the hotline 117. The Department of Examinations can be reached on the hotline 1911. Rescue teams are on alert in affected areas, Handunpathiraja added.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department said the prevailing inclement weather conditions in the Puttalam District will continue in the next few days and certain areas in the District will experience heavy showers above 100 millimetres.

The Department further said heavy showers above 100 millimetres could occur at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala Districts today (25).

The Department also cautioned the public of possible strong winds and lightning strikes and advised precautionary measures to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning strikes.
