Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake, yesterday (24), ordered the Government Analyst to submit reports compiled on 25 vehicles, including buses that had been damaged or torched, during the violent attack on peaceful protesters at Galle Face Green on 9 May.
Police had informed the Court, that they commenced an investigation into the torching of 18 buses near the Hulftsdorp area, an ambulance, two jeeps and a further 25 vehicles.
The Police told Additional Magistrate Ratnayake, that they are conducting their investigations into the incident with the assistance of CCTV camera footage and noted that to date they are yet to arrest any suspects in connection with the incident. The Police had further informed the Court, that a V8 vehicle belonging to the Trade Ministry had been set ablaze at F.R. Senanayake Avenue and that MP Ashoka Priyantha and his security officer, had been travelling in that luxury vehicle at the time.
The Police stated that amidst the commotion, the security officer had escorted the MP to safety, after which he had provided a statement to the Police.
Police added their investigations had revealed that SLPP CMC member Mahinda Kahandawala had travelled in the Wagon R vehicle that was set on fire.
Accordingly the Police prayed the Court, to issue an order to the Government Analyst to submit to Court the necessary reports regarding torched vehicles.
