Agri Minister calls for prompt probe

Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera called for a prompt investigation into the stocks of chemical fertiliser found in homes of several politicians that came under arson attacks on 9 May.

According to Media reports, stocks of urea were found in former Minister Chamal Rajapaksa and North Central Province Governor Maheepala Herath’s homes.

Following the tragic turn of events on 9 May where SLPP supporters attacked anti-government protesters, houses of several politicians were set on fire. Media reported that large stocks of urea were found in houses of several politicians that were set ablaze.

Amaraweera also called for a report on whether the stock of chemical fertiliser was from the subsidy provided to farmers or whether they were purchased from private traders at the existing price or if it was previously issued by the National Fertiliser Secretariat.

He said he was taken by surprise on being informed of the stocks of urea in a backdrop where farmers did not have chemical fertiliser while adding that when he receives the report, a special statement in this regard will be made in Parliament.
