CID summons Public Security Secretary

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (23), summoned Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Major General (Retd) Jagath Alwis in relation to the attack on anti-Government protesters by SLPP supporters on 9 May.

Alwis, who was summoned by the CID based on a statement previously recorded by the CID from Western Province SDIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, gave statements for over four hours.

The CID recorded a statement from Tennakoon in connection with the incident on Tuesday 17, while statements were also recorded from IGP C.D. Wickramaratne. Further, statements were also recorded by the CID from SLPP MPs Rohitha Abeygunawardena, C.B. Rathnayake, Sanjeeva Edirimanna, and Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

Former Prime Minister Rajapaksa and his close confidants led by Johnston Fernando and Sanath Nishantha provoked SLPP supporters and instigated them to attack peaceful protesters in front of Temple Trees and Galle Face in a final attempt to retain power that resulted in a bloodbath in the country on 9 May.

Violence escalated islandwide, when a large number of Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters attacked peaceful protesters at the MynaGoGama protest site in front of Temple Trees and GotaGoGama protest site at Galle Face in Colombo, killing at least nine people, including a Parliamentarian and injuring over 200 persons.
