Rat fever taking its toll in Gampaha, Kegalle, Galle


The number of Leptospirosis (rat fever) patients in the Southern Province is on the rise with three deaths being reported, the Galle District Health Director’s Office stated.

146 Leptospirosis patients have been reported from the Galle District, with the highest number of patients being reported from the Elpitiya Division.

Elpitiya reported 34 cases of rat fever, while Akmeemana reported 24 and Karandeniya reported 15 cases.

The Gampaha District reported the highest number of Leptospirosis patients in Sri Lanka with the Kegalle District reporting the second highest.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Director of Health in the affected areas has directed farmers to seek health advice and antibiotics during paddy cultivation and immediate medical attention if they develop a fever.
