Another group of SLFP MPs is reportedly preparing to join the Government by accepting Ministerial portfolios, Ceylon Today learns.
According to a senior SLFP member, several senior members of the party’s parliamentary group are eager to take over Ministries, adding that, several others were planning to join the Government to support it.
According to internal party sources, there is a schism among the party’s parliamentary group over the party’s support for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government.
Shantha Bandara, Suren Raghavan, and Nimal Siripala de Silva have joined the ruling party after representing the 14-member SLFP faction in the parliamentary elections. According to reports, the number of seats in the SLFP will likely decrease to a single digit in the future as several others prepare to support the Government due to internal party disagreements.
Meanwhile, SLFP Deputy Chairman MP Chamara Sampath Dasanayake recently said if the SLFP does not take a clear decision, he was willing to support the Government. When contacted, he said that the party should decide whether or not to accept ministerial positions. According to reports, MP Sampath expressed his enthusiasm to support the Government at a recent SLFP Central Committee meeting.
