State of Emergency not in force presently


The State of Emergency imposed recently in view of the prevailing crisis in the country was lifted after midnight yesterday (20).

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency on 6 May to safeguard the country’s situation and maintain public safety.

Emergency Regulations must be passed in Parliament within 10 days from the date of its declaration, however, the current regulation was not tabled in Parliament. Therefore, it can no longer be in force.
