Tear Gas, water cannon used to disperse IUSF protesters

The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) protest march, yesterday (19) afternoon, began in front of the University of Fine Arts, Colombo. The march was organised under the slogan ‘Let’s overthrow the Gota-Ranil Conspiracy Government – overthrow the system’.

The protesters marched in front of the Fort Railway Station with the intention of heading towards President’s House in the Fort. The march resulted in heavy traffic congestion on several roads in Colombo.

Police obtained a Court Order prohibiting the IUSF from entering York Street, Chatham Street, and Janadhipathi Mawatha and from causing damage to public property. Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage issued the directive after reviewing facts presented by the Police regarding the protest march.

During the march, Police warned that IUSF protesters not to cause damage to public property.

The order also said that no illegal activities should be carried out in the Fort Police Division, such as entering and damaging Government institutions or official residences.

Later, Police used water cannon and teargas to disperse the IUSF protesters.

However, the protesters threw the teargas back to the Police.
