Mahinda should have retired after presidency – Chamal

It would have been better if former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa retired from politics after completing his two terms as the President, SLPP MP Chamal Rajapaksa said in Parliament yesterday (19).

Rajapaksa noted that when doing politics one should be aware of when to retire.

“If not, tragedies like recent situations in the country would happen. Therefore, it is very important for a politician to have a sense to know the best time to retire from the politics,” he added.

Speaking further, Rajapaksa said, those who came from Temple Trees and attacked protesters at Galle Face on 9 May had been misled by someone.

“We do not need to tell the political history of Rajapaksa family. Our political journey started in the 1930s and nine decades have passed now. We have pawned our properties to contest elections. Some of the properties are still pawned. We have not been able to release them completely.

We engaged in politics with honest intentions. That is why we are still in the political arena in the country. It would have been better if the former PM retired from politics after completing his two terms as President. As a result of him not doing that, everything has been destroyed. Our sacrifices for politics have completely gone in vain,” he said.

We have to practice giving up on certain occasions according to our Dhamma.  If we become greedy for the post, we would have to face these kinds of situations, he pointed out.

“Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is a very lucky person. In 2015, he became the PM without the majority in Parliament. Today, he has become the PM again with a single seat in the House. Let’s work together and maintain discipline in the House, so we can come up with the solutions for the crises,” he pointed out.
