Three dead following motorbike accident

Two young men and a teenager were killed in a motorcycle accident in the Thirunelveli area of Jaffna’s Kopay Police Division on 17 May night.

Kopay Police yesterday (18) said the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the Poonkanichcholai Children’s Park along the Ramalingam Road in Thirunelveli.

According to Police, three people riding on one motorcycle collided with another motorcycle. Due to their high speeds, the two motorcycles travelling in opposite directions lost control and collided head on, killing three young men. Two motorcyclists and one pillion rider died from their injuries and the second pillion rider, who was critically injured in the accident, is being treated at Jaffna Teaching Hospital’s accident ward.

The victims were 17, 23, and 25-year-old residents from Chunnakam, Kopay, and Jaffna. The two motorcycles caught fire and locals had a difficult time putting it out. Following the accident, the Kopay Police Department rushed to the scene and transported the bodies and the critically injured person to the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by reckless driving.
