Rahim ton helps Bangladesh take lead

Mushfiqur Rahim’s eighth Test hundred helped Bangladesh reach 465 all out on Day 4 of the first Test against Sri Lanka, in Chattogram, on Wednesday. Through the course of his innings, the veteran batter also became the first Bangladesh player to register 5000 Test runs.

Even as the hosts have lost three wickets since the start of play on Wednesday, Mushfiqur’s century has enabled them to take a 68-run lead at the end of the second session’s play. In a slow-moving session where only 51 runs were scored, Bangladesh lost two wickets soon after the Lunch break. Kasun Rajitha ended Litton Das’s stay on 88, and Tamim Iqbal who had retired hurt yesterday, after scoring a century had his stumps shattered by the pacer. Tamim was dismissed without being able to add to his overnight score. Shakib Al Hasan survived an early chance when the ball lobbed towards Oshada Fernando at short leg but dropped just short of the fielder.

Despite not looking fluent, Shakib looked to counter-attack the Sri Lankan bowlers but was eventually out gloving a pull to the wicketkeeper, on 26. Mushfiqur, however, saw through a testing period, without much trouble.

Earlier in the day, play started half an hour late due to a rain delay. Liton and Mushfiqur went through the morning session untroubled but their partnership was brought to an end soon after lunch, on 201.

Sri Lanka were 39 for 2 in their second innings. Oshada Fernando was run out for 19 and skipper Dimuth Karunarathne was unbeaten on 18. Night watchman Lasith Embuldeniya was bowled by Taijul Islam for 2.
