MR shows up in Parliament

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa made his first public appearance after his resignation yesterday (18), in Parliament. SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa was also seen in the House as well.

The PM resigned on 9 May after the SLPP supporters’ attack on peaceful protesters at MynaGoGama in front of Temple Trees and GotaGoGama at Galle Face on 9 May on the same day. Violence erupted islandwide, followed by the said attacks, killing at least eight persons including SLPP MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and injuring more than 200.

Rajapaksa along with his family was temporarily sheltered at the Trincomalee Naval Dockyard soon after his resignation.

According to Defence Ministry Secretary Kamal Gunaratne, once the situation returns to normalcy, the former PM would be moved to a residence or location of his choice.
