Wickremesinghe’s PM appointment constitutional – Abeywardena

UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena yesterday (17) claimed that criticisms levelled against the appointment of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister amid the economic crisis are attempts to mislead the people.

He said that Wickremesinghe has been appointed Prime Minister in accordance with Article 37 of the Constitution.

UNP Chairman Abeywardena also said it is important that Premier Wickremesinghe is supported to help alleviate the crisis and urged parities to work together without blaming each other and misleading the public.

Abeywardena also asked religious leaders to act responsibly and make public statements about the country’s current crisis and future.

The UNP Chairman cited Article 37 of the Constitution that measures must be taken when the country is in a severe crisis.

Abeywardena recalled that Winston Churchill was appointed Prime Minister of Britain during World War II due to the power vested in the Constitution. Present Russian President Vladimir Putin was also appointed as the President of Russia in 1999 as such arrangements had been made in the Constitution.

“At a time when there are arrangements in the Constitution for such appointments, such statements by religious leaders are a matter of concern,” Abeywardena added.
