Monsoon conditions gradually establishing over island

The South-West monsoon condition is gradually establishing over the island, the Department of Meteorology says.

Showers or thundershowers will occur today (18) at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, while fairly heavy showers about 75 mm can occur at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers will also occur in the Northern Province and the Anuradhapura district.

Strong winds about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slope of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces and in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

The Department adviced the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
