Ten arrested over Trinco protests


Police have arrested more than 10 persons who were suspected of being involved in the Trincomalee protests and violent incidents. The arrests were made on 15 May in the Kantale Police Division.

According to relatives, these individuals were summoned by Police to record statements in connection with the attack on the house of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Trincomalee District MP Kapila Nuwan Athukorala in Kantale.

Roshan Akmeemana, a social service activist and the Trincomalee District Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union, claimed that Police arrested protesters who were peacefully opposing the Government. “It emphasises the government’s tyranny,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the Trincomalee town’s social service activists, who was summoned to Uppuveli Police yesterday (16) was released after recording his statement. Akmeemana said.
