The proposal to suspend Parliament Standing Orders to debate the motion expressing displeasure over the President was rejected in Parliament today (17).
TNA MP Sumanthiran proposed to suspend Standing Orders to take up the motion against the President as a matter of urgency.
His proposal was seconded by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Lakshman Kiriella.
However, Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena opposed the move and requested the speaker to announce a vote, claiming the motion can be debated on another day without suspending the Standing Orders.
The Government defeated the proposal after securing 119 votes, while the Opposition only obtained 68 votes.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also voted against the motion.
