Openers give Bangladesh good start

Angelo Mathews fell short by just one run of a well-deserved double century in the final session of Day 2, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 397. In reply, Bangladesh made a strong start with openers Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy putting on an unbeaten partnership of 76 as the hosts ended the day trailing by 321 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Mathews was on 178 when the final session resumed and took Sri Lanka close to the 400-run mark with his stellar innings, and with Asitha Fernando for company the pair added 47 runs for the eighth wicket. Nayeem Hasan, who had four wickets by then, struck with the wickets of Asitha and Mathews to end Sri Lanka’s resistance and finish with a six-wicket haul.

Bangladesh’s spinners did well to keep Sri Lanka in check, who were looking set to get a total close to 500. Nayeem and Shakib Al Hasan shared nine wickets between them, with the latter returning 3-30. Vishwa Fernando was hit by a bouncer and he retired hurt but returned to bat towards the end to support Mathews. Apart from Mathews, there were crucial contributions from Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal which ensured they reached close to 400.

It was a good wicket to bat on and Bangladesh’s openers made the most of it. Tamim was dropped early at second slip, but it didn’t matter as Asitha Fernando had bowled a no-ball. Thereafter, the opening pair offered no chances and scored at a healthy rate of 4 runs in the 19 overs they had to negotiate the final hour of play. Tamim struck four boundaries in his 35, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy had five in his unbeaten 31.
