MCPA should play the role of observer – Ranil

The Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association (MCPA) said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe proposed that health trade unions play the role of observers by working in collaboration with Health Ministry, instead of unnecessarily meddling in the affairs of the ministry.

MCPA President Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa said yesterday (16) his outfit had met Wickremesinghe prior to his appointment as Premier, for a discussion which lasted over four hours.

During the discussion, Wickremesinghe had suggested that trade unions play an observer role in Health Ministry’s function as opposed to meddling and attempting to influence the ministry.

Wickremesinghe had said such individual trade union activities hindered the expansion of the scope of education and health services, so much so that the country faced a setback in increasing its national income and protecting free education and healthcare.

Dr. Sanjeewa said they exchanged views on the changes that have taken place in education and health sectors owing to the current economic crisis.

“Wickremesinghe explained the changes he hopes to make to the economy, health and the education sector,” he added.

The meeting was attended by senior UNP members, Specialist Doctors representing the Ministries of Health and Education, Professors, Vice Chancellors and several Faculty Deans and ‘foreign’ qualified doctors. Attention was also drawn to sanction the support of these groups in expanding the activities of the MCPA both nationally and internationally.

The MCPA President said his team also met Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, JJB Leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and SJB MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.
