Instigators of last week’s violent attacks will be arrested in coming days – IGP

IGP informed the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) that a number of arrests will be made in relation to the attack on anti-Government protesters by SLPP supporters opposite Temple Trees and Galle Face within the next two days.

This was during a meeting between the President and Deputy President of the BASL and IGP and Senior officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Police Headquarters yesterday (16) upon the IGP’s invitation.

The President of the BASL, Saliya Pieris PC pointed to the IGP and the senior officers of the CID the importance of maintaining public confidence in the investigations by taking prompt and effective action on the matters.

BASL previously demanded the immediate arrest of all persons who instigated, conspired to unleash the violent mob from the Temple Trees and participated in the violence, irrespective of the positions they held in the Government or of their family connections.

Further, the Attorney General yesterday directed the IGP and CID Director to arrest 22 individuals including SLPP MPs Jonhston Fernando and Sanath Nishantha and produce them in Court as soon as possible, in connection with the attack by SLPP supporters on peaceful anti-Government protesters, if there is reasonable suspicion for doing so.

SLPP MPs Milan Jayathilake, Sanjeeva Ediramanna, Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, Mahinda Kahandagama, Dan Priyasad and Western Province SDIG Deshabandu Tennakoon were also among those named in the letter.
