Independent coalition to support Govt

The coalition of 10 political parties that withdrew from the Government and now operates independently has unanimously decided to support Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe without taking up any ministerial portfolios.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader MP Udaya Gammanpila told the media yesterday (16), following their meeting with Wickremesinghe that they have decided to support the Prime Minister, without taking up any ministerial portfolios in order to rebuild the country.

Gammanpila said while they will not accept ministerial portfolios, they will participate in the Prime Minister’s proposed 15 committees to discuss and provide solutions to the people’s problems.

“The Prime Minister urged everyone to put aside their political differences and work together to solve the crisis. In a letter to the former Prime Minister, dated 8 April 2022, we informed him that our group had called for an
All-Party Government,” he said.

According to Gammanpila, the Prime Minister had said there was a need to form a National Council comprising all party leaders and that 15 committees will be appointed, with those committees chaired by political parties that refuse to accept ministerial positions.

On the Prime Minister’s invitation, the SLFP has also decided to support the formation of a new Government. SLFP MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, and Dushmantha Mithrapala met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (16) morning to discuss SLFP’s support in forming the government.

Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Amaraweera, Duminda Dissanayake, Jagath Pushpakumara, and Lasantha Alagiyawanna of the SLFP have also decided to support the Prime Minister.
