Around 400 arrested over 9 May riots


Nearly 400 people have been arrested in connection with the recent mob violence, including the attack at Galle Face and near Temple Trees.

According to Police, 159 were arrested on 15 May. The suspects were arrested for vandalism, looting. assault, and other offences.

On 9 May, mobs led by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) attacked peaceful demonstraters near Temple Trees and at Galle Face. Vigilantes then took to the streets and set fire to buses that brought the SLPP supporters to Colombo.

They also attacked property associated with the SLPP and assaulted a number of people.

The Police yesterday (16) sought public assistance to identify those involved in the attacks.
