SLFP agrees to support Govt under Ranil

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has agreed to support the formation of an All-Party Government (APG) under the new Premiership and has vowed to assist the Government, both within and outside Parliament.

In response to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s letter, SLFP Leader Maithripala Sirisena said that he and his party are willing to extend their assistance in overcoming the economic catastrophe that has befallen the country.

In his response to the Prime Minister, he also requested time to meet with SLFP representatives to discuss possible ministerial responsibilities. The Prime Minister, in a letter, requested the assistance of the independent parties in Parliament.

There has been talk that the SLFP is willing to accept six ministerial roles under Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s leadership.

Highly placed sources told Ceylon Today that six SLFP MPs had met Wickremesinghe shortly after the latter was sworn in as Prime Minister and pledged their support to him in order to save the country from anarchy.

However, later, the SLFP MPs had decided at the Central Committee meeting not to take up any ministerial roles and instead to support the Government in making good and healthy decisions. Sirisena announced the decision at the committee meeting. A special meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. yesterday, but it was later cancelled.
