Despite the fact that petrol distribution resumed today (16), a severe petrol shortage will persist for some time until a petrol shipment arrives in Sri Lanka.
According to internal sources, the cause for the severe petrol shortage is that the Government has refused to release funds to clear a shipment of 37,000 metric tons of petrol that is already anchored in Sri Lankan waters.
The country was experiencing a severe diesel shortage and following the release of 40,000 metric tons of diesel, distribution resumed last night from the Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela petroleum terminals.
Due to the closure of fuel stations over the weekend, people were forced to wait in lengthy queues. Meanwhile, it is reported that Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals LTD did not release any fuel for distribution yesterday.
