Dozen Indian poachers given suspended sentence

The Kilinochchi Magistrate sentenced 12 Indian fishermen to two years in jail, suspended over 15 years for illegally fishing in the seas surrounding Kilinochchi. They were also fined Rs 50,000 each.

The Navy arrested the 12 fishermen on 23 March and turned them over to the Kilinochchi Fisheries Inspectorate.

The poachers were found guilty on three counts of trespassing in Sri Lankan waters, two counts of using prohibited fishing gear and fishing without a licence.

After they paid the fines, the Magistrate ordered the 12 fishermen released and returned to India. This is the first time a group of Indian fishermen have been fined.
