So far, 230 people have been arrested in connection with the 9 May arson attacks on houses and vehicles, in various parts of the country.
According to Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa, 707 incidents of arson attacks and damage to properties were reported that day. As a result, he said, 230 people involved in these incidents have been arrested on suspicion.
He said that 68 of the suspects had been remanded, while the remaining were scheduled to appear in Court.
According to him, 71 people were arrested in the Western Province, 43 in the Southern Province, 17 in the Central Province, 36 in the North Western Province, 47 in the North Central Province, 13 in Sabaragamuwa, two in Uva, and one in the Northern Province.
The Police Media Spokesman added that the CID is investigating the incidents and the Attorney General is overseeing the situation.
