State Vesak Festival cancelled

The State Vesak Festival, originally slated to be held at the Kuragala Rajamaha Vihara was cancelled due to the volatile political situation in the country.

The Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, which marks the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha, is set to be marked by Buddhists worldwide on 15 May.

This time around the public’s enthusiasm to decorate and light lanterns has waned due to economic woes.

Due to the Easter Sunday Attacks, the Vesak celebrations were cancelled in 2019, while the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in celebrations being scaled down up to last year.
