New challenges in the wizarding world

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, also known as Fantastic Beasts 3, released recently. The fantasy adventure film with the tagline ‘return to the magic,’ unfolds showing viewers how Grindelwald is planning to take control of the wizarding world, while Dumbledore tries to stop him with a team of his own.

The new film is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and is the third instalment as part of the popular Fantastic Beasts film series andcomes as the 11th film in the Wizarding World franchise.

The screenplay by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, follows the storyset several years after the events of the previous film, as it features an ensemble cast of stars, that include Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald, Richard Coyle as Aberforth Dumbledore, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Jessica Williams as Professor Eulalie ‘Lally’ Hicks, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander, Poppy Corby-Tuech as Vinda Rosier, Victoria Yeates as Bunty Broadacre, and Ezea Miller as Aurelius Dumbledore, also known by the name Credence Barebone.

The spinoff this time centres on the wizarding world, where dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is taking steps to seize control through corrupt and dangerous tactics, with plans that could cause absolute chaos. Professor Albus Dumbledore is aware of what is about to happen, but he also knows that he alone, will not be able to stop Grindelwald, so he creates a team with the help of magizoologist Newt Scamander. Together they work with a team of witches and wizards, each with their own strengths, in an effort to stop the wizarding world from falling into the wrong hands.

This is a story which unfolds with clear depth and direction, filled with magic, and danger at every turn, with several obstacles along the wayas followers of Grindelwald, take steps to try to make sure that he gains power.

The role of Grindelwald, which was previously played by Johnny Depp, had to be replaced with a new cast member, after he was asked to hand in his resignation, after he was plagued by negative publicity. Mads Mikkelsen, as the replacement, manages to deliver an equally, or at times better portrayal of the character, adding his own touch of emotion and strength to the role, which this time centres on the broken relationship with Dumbledore. This relationship is at the core of the film’s plot as it guides the actions taken by Dumbledore. Meanwhile, the relationship between Jacob and Queenie adds a love story element to the story. Newt’s character as always, adds an awkward, but charming, and kind, element to the story, which is enjoyable to watch. Every character plays an important role in this film and their individual roles are given clear importance with each one having a strength that is crucial to completing a secret plan.

The 142-minute film by director David Yates, was produced by Lionel Wigram, Steve Kloves, Tim Lewis, David Heyman, and J. K. Rowling herself, working in collaboration with production companies Warner Bros. Pictures and Heyday Films. Made with a budget of US$ 200 million, the film was initially scheduled for a November 2020 release, but after delays due to the pandemic during production, it was postponed, and is finally making its way to cinemas around the world. The film’s release proved to be a financial success, raking in over 193.4 million at the worldwide box-office, ahead of release dates in several countries. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has received mixed reviews, backed by moderate ratings, with 48 per cent featured on Rotten Tomatoes, 47 per cent on Metacritic and 6.6/10 on IMDb. The film hasbeen seen by some as a fitting instalment and an improvement compared to its predecessor.

The film features several small stories, which come together seamlessly, while a Qilin, a magical creature who can find a worthy person who is pure of heart, brings an ancient tradition, to the forefront of the wizarding world.

This instalment will be a fan favourite as it once again transports fans of the franchise, into a world of magic, as the struggle to keep it safe from going into the wrong hands becomes more complex, as it introduces viewers to new characters and creatures, while also taking fans to a more familiar place, with a visit to Hogwarts.
