Independents declare: Will support Govt’s credible moves

National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa said they will support the Government in their credible moves, but if they are going off course, they will initiate corrective action.

He also said even though the President agreed with the proposals presented by them, he has suddenly appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.

He was speaking at a Media briefing on Friday (13) representing the 10 coalition parties of the Government that become independent in Parliament recently.

“We have warned about the crisis and anarchy we are going to face from the beginning and as a result MP Udaya Gammanpila and I were removed from our ministerial posts,” he added.

He stressed that they had already proposed for the PM to step down and then form an All Party Interim Government and set up a National Council (NC) with one representative from each party.

“The decisions will then be taken by the NC. We also proposed that there should be a specialist committee to advise the NC. The PM can be appointed with the agreement of this council,” he pointed out.

He further said they did not want to let Mahinda Rajapaksa leave as a stale fish.

“If Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down peacefully earlier, he would not have to be hidden, and this situation could have been avoided. MPs Johnston Fernando, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Sanath Nishantha, and Basil Rajapaksa did not let him resign peacefully. But we wanted to stabilise the country,” Weerawansa said.

Weerawansa also said the President responded positively to their proposals, but the former Prime Minister was unwilling to resign. They had presented their eleven proposals to the President after the Prime Minister stepped down, and as the President agreed they had discussed formally and informally about them, covering all parties in Parliament.

We requested to set up an All Party Government and save the people and the country from anarchy. Further, he alleged that unfortunately, no one was willing to take the risk, play the role of a leader.

He also said they had already developed programmes with the help of other parties and the specialists how to work after accepting the All Party Government. Weerawansa complained about the sudden appointment of Wickremesinghe as the PM in such a situation.

He alleged that the Opposition is also responsible for Wickremesinghe being appointed as the Prime Minister

“We do not foolishly believe that Wickremesinghe will be able to find solutions to the current crisis, as he is also responsible for this crisis. But we will not carry out a disruptive or hateful political agenda. Instead, we will be helping the plausible work while in the Opposition. We are afraid that Wickremesinghe will take the reins and get ready to play the match that Basil Rajapaksa could not play,” he stressed.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila said if Wickremesinghe takes action to save the country from this situation, they will help as the Opposition party.

MP Gevindu Kumaratunga said they are supporting to bring the 21st Amendment and also said the electoral system should be revamped without any corruption.

MP Weerasumana Weerasinghe alleged that this government made a Black May as Black July in 1983.

MPs Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Prof. Tissa Vitarana were also present at the Media briefing.
