Several areas in central hills hit by landslides

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) yesterday (12) stated that several landslides had occurred in the Norwood, Hatton, and Bridge areas in the Central Hill country following the recent inclement weather.

Due to heavy rains on 11 May night, an embankment collapsed onto the Norton Bridge filling station, causing significant damage to the building, NBRO said.

During the incident, a three-wheeler and two motorcycles parked at the filling station were also damaged. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

In another incident, a landslide stopped traffic along the Norton Bridge, Diyagala Road. Vehicular movement returned to normal after the Road Development Authority removed all debris from the area.

“As there are possibilities for landslides at several locations on this road, motorists who frequently use this road have been asked to use alternative roads until further notice. Landslides had occurred at several locations along the Castlereigh, Norton Bridge Road,” Senior Scientist at NBRO, Dr. Wasantha Senadeera said.

Motorists who travel through landslide-prone areas have been cautioned to be vigilant and use alternative roads to minimise the possible damages, Dr. Senadeera added.
