Sajith says ready to accept PM post

Hours before Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa expressed willingness to accept the Premier post and form a new Government to end the crises in the country.

Premadasa, however, said he would accept the post under four conditions. In a Media release, Premadasa explained that the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa within a stipulated time period is the SJB’s first condition. Premadasa also stressed that the President should not interfere in any way with the All-party Interim Government.  Restoring and enacting the 19th Amendment within two weeks, with the support of all parties that represent Parliament is the second condition.

“Working together with the support of all parties to implement in a minimum period of time the provisions of the 21st Amendment, which we have already tabled in Parliament, is the third condition,” he said.

He emphasised that the Executive Presidency must be abolished within a minimum period of time.  Premadasa further said a Parliamentary Election should be held to form a permanent government soon, after restoring stability in the country, and this is fourth and final condition.

Premadasa took this decision after days of refusal, saying that the SJB does not wish to work under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa or support an Interim Government.
