SLFP pledges to back Sajith as ‘Interim PM’

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has pledged to back Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in his bid to become Prime Minister in the new Interim Government.

SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara expressed these concerns to the media yesterday (11) after a discussion with the Maha Sangha in Colombo.

He said the SLFP’s request at this time is that if Premadasa accepts to lead a new government, the SLFP can offer him support, which they are willing to do because the country cannot be anarchised.

“Rather than believing that the Prime Minister cannot be appointed until the President resigns, we say accept that leadership and get to work. SJB was invited first by the President. If that process fails, the next step is to figure out what should be done,” he said.

When asked if Premadasa has set a condition to accept the invitation to become Prime Minister after the President steps down, Jayasekara said the country will be in chaos if the President leaves. He said then there will be no Prime Minister and no President.

“What should we do next? Premadasa must first assume the position of Prime Minister and instruct the rest of the Cabinet to begin the process of appointing the President. Without the President and Prime Minister, who will lead the country?” he queried.
